Here at the RF we believe there is a runner inside everyone. People may say that they “don’t have a runner’s body”, or that they “aren’t built for running”, but we firmly believe that anyone can become a runner. While it is tempting to run out the door and go as fast and far as our body will take us, we’ve found that a mixture of walking and running is the best way to introduce oneself to the activity.
Our “Learn to Run” clinic is catered toward the new or beginner runner. Whether you are here to start your journey towards a healthier, more active lifestyle, or are in need of some motivation, this 9-week clinic will help you achieve your goals. We focus on beginner approaches to proper running techniques and concepts. As a group, we will go over any questions or uncertainties that a beginner athlete may encounter. There is no such thing as a silly question, all questions are important and will be answered to the best of our abilities in order to ensure a fun and healthy running experience. We are all here for each other, for a common purpose, and a common goal.
The clinic meets every Monday at 6:15 P.M. at The Running Factory (5480 Wyandotte St. E). At the beginning of each meeting the instructors or guest speakers will hold a brief information session in which they will cover a variety of topics pertaining to the running process. At the conclusion of each talk, you and your group will hit the roads for the day’s workout. Topics of discussion include: proper biomechanics and form, setting goals, stretching, nutrition, injury prevention, hot and cold weather training, heart rate training, core strength training, and most importantly, fun! We want to show you that running is an enjoyable and social activity and that you can do it!
The L.T.R. clinic is designed to accommodate any fitness level, and form groups accordingly. By offering 4 training levels we can offer a personalized training plan that will correspond with your current fitness and goals. Each level is merely a guideline so that you are able to adapt your training if it is too easy or too difficult. The prerequisites for each level is as follows:Level 1 – To run for 0-3 minutes with little to no running background.
Level 2 – To run continuously for 5-10minutes with little to some running background.
Level 3 – To run continuously for 10-20 minutes or run 5KM with some running background.
Level 4 – To run continuously for 25 minutes or more.
The training plans are laid out in a calendar so that you have a guide to follow daily, weekly, and monthly. The workouts on the calendar consist of a mixture of running and walking, for example, (Level 1) W3R5W2R5W3, would indicate that the workout for the day is walking 3 minutes, running 5 minutes, walking 2 minutes, running 5 minutes, and finally walking 3 minutes. As the workouts progress the amount of running gradually increases as the walking decreases. As previously stated, you are not attached to a group once you have begun. You are able and encouraged to find a group that is both challenging and achievable given your current fitness level.
